Culture Change – Moving away from Tapes to Online Backup

10. April 2010

The change from using a tape based backup solution and moving to an online based solution can sometimes at first glance seem that backing up online is deemed more expensive, means the customers has no control of their data and a lengthy process in setup could be in place. However once everything is analyzed on both solutions it can be seen that online backup is far more the better and safer option.

There are many costs associated with using a tape based backup and not all are associated with just the hardware for example when deciding to use this technology, the customer needs to think about: costs of tapes/drives, daily couriering services, replacement of tapes, support of IT environments (what happens if there is a need to go virtual) and most importantly employee hours (think how much time could be used on other tasks instead of dealing with the daily management of tapes).

“Tape based backup is a 40 year old technology which is no longer suitable for the 21st Century in my opinion, for example now it’s all about DVD/Blue-Ray players as opposed to Cassette players many years ago. As times change so does the technology therefore when considering backup tapes are now found to be more unreliable, unsecure and need a lot of management”, says Alexander Eiríksson, COO of SecurStore.

SecurStore provides an automated backup and recovery solution whereby using agentless software, the customer only needs to do one quick installation on a single machine on their site enabling all computers/servers to be backed up therefore eliminating the need of installing agents or paying for extra licenses. In addition the solution has a local copy feature, which allows customers to backup their critical data onsite therefore allowing recovery of data at LAN speed if needed.

The solution also supports Windows, Mac, Linux and virtualized operating environments as well as many applications including SharePoint, SAP Exchange, Lotus Notes, SQL and Oracle databases which allows customers the freedom of changing their IT systems if required and the knowledge that their data which is the lifeblood of their business will be securely backed up.

SecurStore focus on providing a recovery solution, not a backup one. The emphasis is trying to recover single files, single emails or large amounts of data quickly and securely. Customers have realized that by using tapes, they are more at risk should a disaster strike which in the eventuality of not being able to recover data from a tape means the business will struggle.

The question to ask is: “How much do you value your data”?
