Data migration is not for the faint hearted. It requires conviction, courage and risk taking abilities because the road ahead is mired with non-standard procedures and confusions. The solutions themselves may become hurdles and the need to re-architect seemingly well architected databases can be daunting. Cost benefits may have to be postponed to the future, causing purse strings to tighten.

Having issued all the warnings, it is time to get down to the task of examining how a successful migration project can be orchestrated.

There are three simple rules that must be followed for a successful migration. It may frustrate those who prefer to take the elevator even if they know that taking the stairs will keep their weight down and their heart healthy!

  • Time is of essence, but not at the expense of the migration project. Enterprises launching on a migration exercise need to take the time to analyze their data and examine all the applications that use the data.  They need to understand the pros and cons of running these applications and accessing the data with Cloud based technologies. IT Administrators and other stakeholders must be taken into confidence and issues relating to bandwidth, latency, scalability, high availability, and accessibility must be discussed threadbare to facilitate identification and design of the desired Cloud architecture.
  • Re-architecting data and applications is a business imperative. The data and the applications using the data must be re-architected before migration. IT personnel must spend time and effort in rebuilding the systems and re training their personnel in the use of the new architecture. While this slows down the process of migration, it will ensure that the ultimately migrated applications work just as desired.
  • Pay upfront to save later. It is a well documented fact that the Cloud saves on costs. But, the savings will be commensurate with the efforts put in upfront.  It is worth the while to pay for design and renovation costs before the actual Cloud migration happens. Post migration renovations will prove expensive and may result in downtime.  This exercise will also give the enterprise greater control over the data and help logically orchestrate the steps for effective migration of information.

So, look before you leap and put in all the hard work before the migration and relax after it is all done.
